25th September 2012

A panel discussion will take place on Tuesday 25th September 2012 from 6pm til 8pm.

On this discussion panel, we will have:

  • Caroline Lucas MP for Brighton Pavilion
  • Simon Hesselberg, DeafCOG and Rexash Consultancy
  • Katie Love, Advice Officer, The Fed
  • Caroline Adams, Sussex Sign Language Interpreters
  • Louise Gibson, Deaf Diaspora!
  • Sarah Playforth, DeafCOG and consultant

We are delighted Caroline Lucas MP will be able to join us for this panel discussion. This panel discussion will focus on current issues affecting Deaf people living in Brighton and Hove city. The main focus will be on how to 'regenerate' a community of Deaf people, who are classified as people with disabilities but are often misunderstood. There are some developments taking place in the city, which is supporting the community and other developments, which are eroding their opportunities for independence.

An example of such developments and limitations are: the 'Enabling Deaf Spaces' report's recommendations are currently facilitated by Brighton and Hove city PCT to improve the lives of Deaf people; and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust announced Pearl Linguistics will take over interpreting bookings in Mental Health services, including services to sign language users. But the local interpreters will not adhere to PL's diminished terms and conditions and the ramifications of this contract will had the most vulnerable members of society.

The panel discussion will focus on 'forces that add or take away from Deaf people's quality of life', which would be of interest to local Deaf people and third sector organisations/agencies who serve them.
